With Memorial Day Weekend officially upon us, road trips, adventures and weekend getaway planning has not been able to escape my mind. Summertime can pass us San Franciscans by with the fog, wind and very un-summer vibes, so I’ve created this list for you and me both to encourage each other to never stop exploring. For those located in the Northern California region, you know how lucky we have it! There are mountains, beaches, wineries, rivers and rolling hills that are just waiting to be explored. So, here’s to summer adventures and creating the best one yet because after all summer only comes around once a year. Let’s do this thing!
Golden Gate Fields Horse Races | Berkeley, CA
Each Sunday, the horse races at Golden Gate Fields hosts $1 Sundays, which might just be the best deal in all of Northern California. What does this entail? It means you can get a beer, a hotdog, a program, parking and sodas all for $1 each! Even if you don’t like to participate on the actuall horse race bets, skip brunch for a different type of Sunday experience at the polo fields that have been around for over 75 years!
Float Down The Russian River | Sonoma, CA
With water levels as high as they have been in several years, this is the year to float down the Russian River. There are many places to stay in Sonoma, including some awesome hotels such as Boon Hotel + Spa or you can even camp in an airstream among the redwoods at AutoCamp. If hotels aren’t your thing, look into renting a house that backs up to Russian River for easy access to the water.
Join A Feastly Brunch or Cooking Demo | San Francisco, CA
For those local to San Francisco, Feastly is an organized community of both chefs and eaters who get to experience much more than simply eating. These events are hosted by those within the community and the San Francisco events just so happen to be some of the coolest ones to meet people and dig in to some delicious meals prepared by local chefs.
Hike Alamere Falls | Point Reyes National Seashore, CA
Though I’ve made it to Point Reyes several times, this hike has been a day adventure I’ve longed to complete ever since I moved back home to Northern California. The waterfall runs onto the sand and after the amount of rain that we got this winter, I can only bet how beautiful it is this time of year.
Visit Lagunitas Brewing Co | Petaluma, CA
A long time bucket list item is to visit the Lagunitas Brewing Co for brews, a tour and a picnic on their outside patio. On the weekends, live music begins at 3pm, so it’s a guaranteed good time and is great for groups!
Giants Game On A Sunny Afternoon | San Francisco, CA
Any San Franciscan knows that a trip to AT&T park on one of those rare, warm days can be one of the most proud things to do in a city that loves its baseball! If you’re not so much into the game as much as the atmosphere and garlic fries, choose the less expensive bleacher seats to be in the center of the upbeat crowd and close proximity to the beer garden.
Road Trip Through Bolinas to Bodega Bay | North Bay, CA
Car rides along the California coast scream summer, and any traveler knows that it’s always a good day for a short getaway outside our urban city trip. I’ve done many of these drives, but shucking oysters and visiting tiny cafes along this stretch of highway 1 is an excursion I’m ready to check off my bucket list. Stay tuned for a guide coming your way this summer!
