In addition to the most wonderful engagement party surrounded by our family and friends this past weekend, the word is out! Last Friday, accompanied with my mom and sister at a small bridal boutique, I said “Yes” to the dress! I can’t believe it! During their trip out to San Francisco, we visited 4 shops, some with my bridesmaids, some just us, and some with a close family friend. We finally nailed it down to 2 top contenders that I was completely torn on- the only problem was I found one at one store, and one at the other. Because of this, it eliminated the opportunity to try them on back to back, and I knew trying them both on together at the same store would be the only way I could make my decisions! Thankfully, on the second to last day of my mom and sister’s visit, we found a shop in Walnut Creek that had both styles- yes! We were so excited to visit the store and see the dresses in a new light and new surroundings, hoping I would be able to say “yes” to the dress!
As we arrived at the store, I instantly marked the two dresses that we came there to try on again, and while I was browsing the other dresses, I found 3 more that I loved (they’re all so beautiful, ok!) Since we had already driven to the boutique, we all agreed to try any number of dresses on that caught my eye. The moment I put on one of the new style dresses, I knew I was in trouble…another stunning dress that was a somewhat mix between the two styles that I loved by the same designer. I exited the dressing room and walked towards the couch that my sister and mom were sitting on and stood in the mirror. I fell in love with the dress, but definitely knew that it was important to try on the two styles we came in to see! Needless to say, after trying on a few different veils with the dress, I was sold. The sales person handed me the silly “I Said Yes To The Dress Sign” and we proudly snapped a few photos, signed the order and just like that- I had my wedding dress ordered!
During my experience this past week trying on wedding dresses (and during my first time) I definitely learned a lot that I will be sharing more of, including top stores I visited in the Bay Area, and a few not so glamorous things about visiting the stores. Overall, my experience was so wonderful that I want to pass on what I learned is extremely important to consider before you say “Yes” to the dress!
Coordinate With The Venue
This is a crucial aspect that every bride must consider when choosing her dress. While you of course can choose whatever style you want on your big day, it is important that the general style of your dress lends itself well with your venue and theme of your wedding. For example. a large ballgown most likely would not coordinate with a beach wedding, and a tight dress might not work with your bohemian style wedding you’ve always dreamed about. Think about it, and let the folks in the bridal store know the style of your venue and the season before she/he goes to pick out styles for you to try on!
Listen To The Professionals
When you go into bridal stores, most folks who will help you try on the dresses are skilled in not only styles and cuts of dresses, but also how a dress will appear on your body once alternations begin. They can be extremely helpful when chatting about dresses, and from my experience are not pushy to just make a sale. Most brides will want to sleep on it before saying “Yes” (though that is not always the case, take me for example!) Tip: If you aren’t feeling the store, customer service or simply don’t see any dresses you like, save everyone’s time and energy and kindly decline trying on dresses. With that said, if it is your first shopping experience and you’re unsure of the style you want, by all means- try on the dresses to get a better sense of what will make you feel like a true bride on your wedding day!
Consider Your Bouquet & Accessories
One, if not the biggest factor that helped me choose which dress I loved the most was to imagine them with a bouquet, jewelry and shoes. In my case, one of the top dress contenders had details along the bottom of the dress going up towards the center to the heigh of my knee. Despite the beautiful detail and truly unique designs of this one of a kind dress, I knew my dream of having a large cascading bouquet would get lost and somewhat clash with the bottom details of the dress. The dress I said “Yes” to allows for so many options for overflowing bouquets, stunning jewels and of course, the shoes!
Think About Bridesmaids Dresses
Of course this does not have to be a huge deciding factor since your ladies will go off the style of your dress when they get their own, but bridesmaid dresses are still something to think about- even if it’s brief. If you have a specific look on how you want your bridesmaids to appear while they are standing next to you, be sure to consider how your dress may or may not match with that look you are trying to achieve. For example, if you want your ladies to wear very intricate dresses with sequins or bright, bold colors, it may be best to choose a material and style that will blend well with that style of dresses. This of course is not to say the bridesmaid dresses are more important that picking your dress, but it is something to think about!
Bring Your Loved Ones
If you’ve every watched the show, “Say Yes To The Dress” you’ve probably seen some situations that make you never want to bring more than one or two people to a wedding dress shopping trip. However, it makes the experience so much more fun and helpful! While your friends opinions may be welcomed and most likely encouraged, keep in mind that is is all about how you feel in that dress. Besides- it’s your wedding day! Your friends and family will be honored to join you, and if anything they will keep the bubbly flowing between dresses!
Ultimately, the dress you choose should make you feel beautiful and truly one of a kind. Choose that dress, and everything else will be wonderful! Are you currently shopping for your wedding dress?
