If you’re from the Bay Area, you know that living here is anything but cheap. Entertainment, rent and all things California come at a high dollar price for good reason. We’ve got picture perfect beaches, big old mountains, access to world-famous vineyards in wine country, year round trips to Lake Tahoe, fresh produce, stretches of coastal terrain, ah the list goes on. Because of this, seeking out hidden gems and (almost) free experiences is part of the fun of living here so you don’t completely burn your entire paycheck on travel! I mean, who ever said no to $1 mimosas, even if they are made with cheap sparkling wine?! When I was putting together my 2017 Summer Bucketlist, I knew that finally getting myself out to experience the horse races at Golden Gate Fields should most definitely be included considering it has been around for over 75 years!
When the one Sunday in June wasn’t booked with a weekend getaway, I organized a fun family outing for my family to head to try our luck at betting on horses, to enjoy the sunshine and to sip on some drinks in the sunshine. Once we arrived, we exchanged cash for tokens to use at the concession stands and heading to the “beginners area” to learn the proper lingo and how to actually bet on horses. While we had some time to kill before the horses took the fields, rounds of drinks were passed and bets were places. We explored the area and people watched. As the horses began and the races took place, we could not have been having a better time! It was so much fun to gather around with the other folks at the races who were betting as well, and the warm summer sun kept us satisfied all afternoon. If you’re looking for a family friendly event to go to this summer, I do recommend Golden Gate Fields! An important thing to note, the horse races will begin back up again in August, so be sure to check their website for more information on events!
