When I think back on my childhood, my memories instantly fill with wildflowers, sunshine, dirt and trees. Thankfully so, my parents raised us to spend time in the outdoors. Family camping trips and adventures as a Girl Scout established a relationship with the outdoors that I am so glad I have. Through college and into my years now as a young adult, I crave sand between my toes and sunshine on my skin. Whether it be hiking or exploring a new hidden beach, embracing and learning to love nature is one thing that generation Z may miss out on. The growing number of iPads in the hands of toddlers alongside the present day importance we place on technology has me wondering if the younger generation will ever be able to live a distraction free childhood where spending time in nature is a priority.
Now that the freedom of my own childhood is a memory and adulthood is very much so here, taking the time to enjoy and involve nature in my everyday life has become even more necessary for maintaining happiness in the urban world of San Francisco.
To understanding how to live a wilder life, I spent an afternoon reading A Wilder Life magazine provided to me by WM Goods, a Portland based shop which sells a curated selection of home decor, good for you skin care, jewelry and clothing from makers that craft stunning pieces which are meant to be just as functional as they are beautiful. While enjoying the perfect weekend brunch at home including edible flower goat cheese, smoked salmon and the most refreshing elderflower rose lemonade, I took in every dose of prettiness from the quarterly magazine.
After drooling over each and every page filled with color, creatively and guidance on how to get in touch with nature, I was left feeling inspired and realized that even though many of us work in an office during the week, there are several ways to bring nature into your life. From how to make ricotta cheese and dry shampoo to using natural dyes to color fabric and learning to navigate the stars, A Wilder Life is definitely worth investing in. One of a kind photography brings the season by season guides and stories to life to remind us that no matter how busy life gets, surrounding yourself with nature can bring serenity and comfort to your world.
Often on adventures of my own, I like to collect one small item that represents the experience and time I had on a trip. This could be something as simple as a few wildflowers to preserve or a small seashell to remember an afternoon by. After years of collecting, I realized don’t have a place to keep these small items until I found the cutest treasure pots at WM Goods. The wood is left it’s natural color and the bottom is hand dipped in bright white, soft rubber creating a modern look to hold my special findings from hikes and adventures. If you’re looking for the perfect gift for the modern woman, be sure to check out all the other unique and well designed gifts offered by WM Goods.
