When it comes time to incorporating fitness into our schedules, we all know the struggle of keeping with it. There are some months when motivation runs like water. The months when you somehow have more time in your schedule to exercise and less social obligations to attend. On the flip side, there are months when it seems impossible to get to the gym. The months that are so busy you barely have time to think about working out, let alone getting yourself into the gym. For many, summer are those months. The chance to spend more time outside with friends and family almost always trumps going into the gym. The invites to social events are more abundant, and choosing rosé and a pool is always the answer…right? Ok, maybe you’re not completely on board with this, but if I’m being completely honest, the gym has not seen me around this summer as much as it did in the spring.
Thankfully, the cooler air and falling leaves aren’t the only things that are switching up. Now that summer is ending, I am able to fully commit to getting back into my normal routine and have discovered a few game changing ways to up the motivation that lead to a healthy lifestyle you have (or know you want) this fall. Above all these tips, I will say that having a wedding in my (near) future is a huge motivation for me, especially now that I said “Yes” to the dress! So, if you have any special celebrations that you want to look your very best at, keep that in mind the next time you debate choosing happy hour over fitness. And yes, I completely know how much of a challenge that can be (especially if you have FOMO)!
Shake Up Your Schedule
Did you lose motivation because your routine became mundane? It happens to the best of us! Try changing up your schedule by working out at different times of the day than you were previously. If hitting the gym is the last thing you want to do after a long day at work, see if you can pull off the early morning routine. You can even do a few home workouts before you head into the office if your gym is simply too far away to make it there before work. If you’ve been working out without a friend, try to encourage someone to get on the same routine as you! It helps immensely and you will be less likely to skip out if you have the obligation of a friend that is going with you!
Lead An Overall Healthy Lifestyle
This is a really important aspect worthy of mention. When you lead an overall health focused lifestyle, the desire to sweat it out comes naturally. This lifestyle can range from your eating habits (more salads, less burritos), to getting enough quality sleep, to choosing the stairs over the escalator on your way into work. Little changes, or continuations like these will in turn contribute to an overall feeling of greatness. Working out will be more attainable and more rewarding when you know you’re not wasting all that time in the gym on unhealthy habits. Fitness is not the only contributor to feeling great, your lifestyle is!
On that same note, I am currently in the middle of an alcohol detox to treat my body well and reset. The desire for wine after work has disappeared and the desire to hit the gym has replaced it. Even if you don’t consume alcohol often, we all know that feeling of regret when our plans to sweat it out are ruined from being hungover. It happens, and I have no problem admitting it. This will be especially applicable in winter, when holiday parties and alcohol go hand in hand. If you want to take small steps towards a healthier lifestyle try ordering a mocktail at your next dinner or night out…it’s actually quite liberating knowing you don’t need to rely on or give into the habit of ordering an alcoholic beverage.
Treat Yourself To New Apparel
There is something super exciting about getting new workout clothes, but it’s a type of clothing that is not frequently purchased enough! New workout apparel can provide you with a fresh sense of self, making you feel like you can conquer any class or sweat sesh that you are ready to take on! I just recently connected with Titika Active Couture to incorporate some new pieces from their collection into the mix and my motivation to get back into working out is at an all time high. New, on trend styles are always fun to wear…and Titika is an expert at combining function and style for items perfect for inside and outside of the gym.
Titika has options for not only each body type, but also each level of impact depending on what type of workout you love. Recently, I have been really loving hot yoga, so I knew I wanted to get a sports bra that would be perfect this type of workout. I wanted something that would provide enough support but also with a great style for these classes, and the Lawton Medium Impact Sports Bra checks all the boxes. The longer cut provides a little bit more coverage than a typical sports bra, which is perfect for hot yoga which is sometimes practiced without a tank. My personal favorite aspect of this item is that the straps do not dig into my shoulders, which has been a problem for me in the past. With no discomfort, I can focus 100% on the workout ahead of me instead of worrying about the straps. The sports bra pairs seamlessly with the lightweight Sandra Training Tank, which is ideal for high impact workouts. I love this tank’s strategically placed mesh cutouts that allow breathability even during the most intense workouts. I paired the tank with my new Heart Geo Mesh Legging that are without question the most comfortable and stylish leggings I have ever owned. The leggings feature the same mesh cutouts as the tank in all the right places, and the length is something I truly appreciate. Not only are these perfect for a intense workout, I can definitely see myself wearing these out with booties or black heels with my cozy Grover Knit Sweater. Living in San Francisco, not only are thick sweaters absolutely necessary but leggings and sweaters are almost uniforms for San Franciscans. This sweater will take me from the office to the gym with ease, keeping me warm through the thick blankets of fog that San Francisco is famous for. The versatility that Titika Active Couture items provide are unparalleled, and there is not a shortness on styles and inventory either! Titika puts the true style in athleisure, and I’m completely on board.
Switch Up Your Workouts
I am so content that one of my favorite workout studios, (Ritual Hot Yoga) opened a second location close to my work! Even though I pay a pretty penny for my gym membership, adding hot yoga classes to my routine is a motivational game changer. The different environment, management and experience is not one that you can find at a gym so it provides a refreshing addition to the traditional workout routine. One of the best parts is that a few friends take classes here too, which is so helpful to have others to take the class with. Even if you aren’t looking to travel to another studio, try taking new classes that you never have before or workout outside to take on new challenges. Long paths are always something I’ve preferred to treadmills, and doing steps somewhere other than the stairmaster can be so much more motivating. Even if you’re hesitant, try a new workout anyways and see if it help motivate you to do it again!
Get Plenty Of Sleep
I would say the #1 game changer for me is sleep. Sleep literally affects everything in our lives, not just our exercise habits. I need a lot of it, and the days I don’t get enough are the days I have the hardest time getting motivated to exercise. I even find myself craving meals on the more unhealthy side when I don’t get enough sleep because my body is trying to makeup for lack of rest and is trying to find energy in other places like high calorie meals. Your amount of sleep will determine what your eating habits are like, what your performance is like at the office and your overall mood. Let your body rest and recharge, and it will provide you with all the motivations, energy, and good feelings you will need to take on any fitness class (and life) that you want to!
How do you keep up motivation to exercise? We would all love to hear in the comments below!
