Happy Wedding Wednesday, friends! I don’t know about you, but this past weekend was everything that I needed. Despite the (almost record-breaking) heat wave we faced in San Francisco, it didn’t stop me from making these simple but meaningful wedding countdown cubes that can be displayed in your home for months and months to come. The uncomplicated design was intentional, making it possible to display these cubes for months and months without interrupting the other design elements in your home.
Some of my favorite DIY projects to date are the ones that require little effort because the transformation from something simple to meaningful is always so rewarding. Similar to my recent Save The Date DIY and Succulent Party Favors, these countdown cubes won’t have you running from store to store trying to gather materials.
For this project, you will need 4 wooden cubes in any size, spray paint or acrylic paint color of choice, a marker, white paint, and thin paintbrush.
Step One: Paint The Cubes
Depending on what kind of look you want to achieve, you can use spray paint or regular craft paint to change the look of the cubes. I chose to used copper spray paint to not only save time, but to alter the look of the cubes slightly and match my current style in our home. You can choose to paint the cubes any color you want, such as a color that matches your home or even the color of your wedding! After I spray painted the cubes, I immediately used a paper towel to rub in the paint to avoid the drip marks that are almost inevitable when spray painting such small-sized objects. I sprayed and blotted them once again, and love the way the light copper sheen turned out against the wood.
Step Two: Determine The Numbers & Sketch Them Out
Once your cubes are painted, you will need to sketch out the numbers on each block. For the numbers to properly work out, you need to create 4 blocks since each one only has 6 sides, but 10 numbers are needed. The 6 and 9 will double as the same numbers, so keep that in mind when you choose a font to write in. You can use a stencil if you prefer the numbers to look perfect, or you can do what I did and simply sketch them out. Use the guidelines below for the correct numbers for the cubes.
Numbers For Block One: 0, 1, 2, 3, 7, 8 | Numbers For Block Two: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
Numbers For Block Three: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 | Numbers For Block Four: 0, 4, 7, 8, ♥, ♥
Step Three: Paint The Numbers
Once you have the numbers sketched out and ready, it’s time to paint! I suggest using a small brush and only a minimal amount of paint to ensure the numbers are legible. By doing two coats, your numbers will stand out well. Another great alternative if you want less mess and more precision is using a paint pen or numbered stickers. Let dry and voilà!
Step Four: Style Your Countdown Cubes
To really bring this DIY to life, style the countdown cubes well so they are worthy of display! Try putting them on a small tray, or on a floating shelf in your home with flowers around them. Keep it interesting by switching up the artifacts that display the cubes every once in a while, just as you will change the numbers daily!
The countdown cubes not only serve as a sweet element in your home, but they also helpful to keep you and your husband-to-be on track when it comes to planning! And yes, John and I are 310 days away from our wedding, but who’s counting?! 😉
