If you are familiar with Napa Valley, you know that there are hundred and hundreds of options for a perfect weekend getaway. From restaurants and bars, to wineries and spas, the amount of places to choose from can be overwhelming when planning a trip! Though John and I have traveled to many locations within wine country, Calistoga and St. Helena were two undiscovered spots until a few weeks past. We made it a priority to travel the extra distance than the closer neighboring Sonoma, and now that we’ve experienced all Calistoga has to offer, we’re not sure how we can stay away! The enchanting wineries, focus on relaxation and delicious meals allowed us to have the best weekend possible- rain and all!
Castello di Amorosa
A must stop for the stunning property and one of a kind experience, Castello di Amorosa is a Tuscan inspired castle serving up a large range of wine varieties. Small, enchanting rooms throughout the castle create the experience that your lost somewhere in Europe. While we were visiting, a Game Of Thrones themed private party was about to begin and we joked about how we should try to sneak into it. Party or not, a visit to the castle will not leave you disappointed!
Mount View Hotel & Spa
During our trip to Calistoga, we had the pleasure to stay at Mount View Hotel & Spa, which exceeded all of our expectations. The charming, warm feel of this hotel made our trip extra special thanks to our accommodations in the Terra Valentine inspired luxury suite equip with a Illy espresso, plush pillows, a sitting area and a bottle of Resiling to start our stay off right. This suite included, each suite at Mount View is themed around a different Calistoga winery, allowing guests to choose a theme of their choice! Mount View even offers a selection of cottages equip with outdoor tubs and artist canvases to inspire the art of relaxation!
One of my favorite things about our stay here was the easy accessibility to the shops and restaurants downtown. We hopped from location to location at ease which made our weekend worry free. Included with our stay were two tickets to the Calistoga Shuttle, which will drop off and pick up to almost all wineries within city limits. Since ride sharing services like Lyft are not popular in Calistoga and neither of us wanted to miss out on the wine, the shuttle saved the day. Tip: It can take up to 45 for the shuttle to pick you up. Plan accordingly and be flexible to ensure a stress free day wine tasting!
Between visits to wineries, we enjoyed brunch, dinner and evening glasses of wine at Johnny’s Restaurant & Bar located in the lobby of the hotel. The staff at the restaurant were so kind and the meals (especially breakfast paired with mimosas) made for the perfect start to the day!
The Spa At Mount View
After a day of wine tasting, we sipped on infused water, relaxed and enjoyed a side by side couples massage at Mount View Spa. We arrived early before our appointment to take advantage of the sauna and mineral whirlpool which was delightful. The visit to the spa was without a doubt the highlight of our trip!
The very first winery we visited in Calistoga was Tamber Bey, a short drive or shuttle ride from downtown Calistoga. From the moment we pulled up to the time we left, our visit here was nothing but unique, educational and all around wonderful. We paired cookies with wine, explored the equestrian facility at Sundance Ranch and cozied up next to the heaters while we sipped our wine and watched the cool, misty air start to roll in. We tasted five different wines through the Signature Tasting while learning about the history of Tamber Bey, the facility and the different varieties hosted by our guide. All the wines were just fabulous, and naturally the Pinot Noir was among my favorite. To ensure you are able to take in all the beauty at Tamber Bey, don’t rush your time here- I promise you will absolutely love it!
Wasabi Ginger Cookie & Sauvignon Blanc · Orange Bee Cookie & Trio Chardonay
Cherry Pepper Popper Cookie & Sun Chase Pinot Noir · Black Bacon Cookie & DCV Cabernet Sauvignon
Cardamon Crunch Cookie & DCV Rabicano
Chateau Montelena Winery
Another stunning winery and must stop is the french inspired Chateau Montelena. Driving through tall trees and spotting the chateau on the right hand side when you walk from the parking lot will instantly leave you breathless. The ivy covering the chateau makes this location even more enchanting during the fall when the colors turn deep red and burnt orange. The wine tasting here was one of our favorites and the staff is both knowledge and passionate about their wines!
Downtown St. Helena
A short 10 minute drive from Calistoga is the small town of St. Helena, holding enough charm to keep you happy for a full afternoon. Small shops, restaurants and cafes fill Main Street which gives you the opportunity to enjoy the slow style of life here for a few hours.
During our time in St. Helena, we had a one of a kind brunch at Archetype in the heart of downtown. The owner welcomed us with open arms into the airy restaurant as we took our seats in the breathtaking and perfectly designed interior. The sophisticated farmhouse style design and the entrees left us wanting more. Beginning with fresh squeezed orange juice and Bloody Mary’s, we delightfully split the grilled artichoke to ease our way into our entrees. For my main dish, I indulged in the lemon-ricotta pancakes with blueberry syrup and almond butter as John enjoyed a classic American breakfast equip with eggs, bacon sausage and toast. Needless to say, this is now our go to eatery when we visit St. Helena! Next time, I’m ordering the donut holes with butter pecan sauce!
Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co.
While we unfortunately ran out of time this trip, it is said that Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co. resembles a trip to Tuscany! Let me know if you end up visiting, won’t you?
It wouldn’t be wrong to think of Acres as a smaller Anthropologie (only with more affordable prices). We stopped in and purchased the most adorable rainboot ornament for our tree and a new air plant for the collection, because how could I resist?! Anyone who has a passion for home decor, gardening and cutesy home accents will fall in love with this shop!
All in all, our weekend in Calistoga was the perfect opportunity to escape the holiday busyness and embrace the art of relaxation while exploring a new city in California! Have you ever spent a weekend in Calistoga or St. Helena? What are your favorite locations?
